Club awarded BAFTER

The Club  gained the Outstanding Achievement Award for Waste Action at the Best Action for the Environment Road Show 2007 (BAFTER).  This was mainly in recognition for the work done by one member who produces cards from recycled cards and recycled cellophane wrappers.  Funds raised go to a variety of charities. The Fashion Show entitled Waste Not Want Not was mentioned as this event raised awareness of the environment by models wearing clothes from a high class second hand dress shop in Ripon and clothes designed by Harrogate College made out of buttons, plastic bags and men's ties

President's Year 2006/07

Women in the Community Award

President Maureen Ingleton and SI Yorkshire President Elect Pat Shore present Eleanor McRobert, Chairman of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf with her award and recognition for her service to the community.

This year, President Maureen’s Charity is for Music and the Deaf, and both she, and the members decided to honour the commitment, of a special woman working within the field of hearing impairment.

Eleanor, is the Chairperson of the Harrogate fundraising group, for Hearing Dogs for Deaf people.

This National charity was launched 25years ago, in 1982, at Crufts.

Hearing dogs change lives by alerting their owners to sounds we take for granted. They provide greater independence, confidence, and security .In this country 1 in 7 people will become partially or totally deaf.

Eleanor has worked tirelessly for this charity, and has supported 11 dogs for 2/3 months each, in order to socialise them prior to their undertaking their official training at the Beatrice Wright Centre at Selby. She is totally dedicated to her work, and takes them on countless visits around the community, even including them in bell ringing practice in Knaresborough. Tonight she has brought her latest dog Jonah on yet another part of his socialisation programme.

IRENE KERR RECEIVES YEAR OF THE VOLUNTEER WARD

Soroptimist International of Harrogate and District is very proud of member Irene Kerr who received a Year of the Volunteer Commemorative Medal, struck specially, by the Royal Mint. This is government sponsored initiative to celebrate volunteering in the Year of the Volunteer.

Irene received the ward presented by the Lord Mayor of London at the Guildhall in London in January this year. She was nominated by the Alzheimer's Society for her outstanding contribution to the Voluntary Sector in the North of England and in London over almost 60 years. Irene is currently the Vice Chairman of the National Alzheimer's Society, undertaking voluntary work on behalf of the society nationally, internationally and locally. Irene remains as a "hands on" volunteer, working with the Ripon and Harrogate Branch where she is also Vice Chairman.

Irene’s ward was in recognition of the "VOLUNTEERS WHOSE WORK HAS TRANSFORMED LIVES, ENVIRONMENTS AND COMMUNITIES

Part of the citation for the ward was a recognition of Irene’s “willingness to roll up her sleeves and get on with any task, her wonderful, warm sense of humour, that all contribute to her becoming a champion of champions."

The Club is very proud of Irene’s achievement and recognition. She is an active club member and brings the same enthusiasm and commitment to Soroptimism.
